So on Friday we took it upon ourselves with permission obviously to rackmount one of the new virtual machines base computer into a rackmountable case. As currently they are normal desktops from the lab rooms which are across the desks which doesn’t look very professional also kinda bad if they get unplugged and vms go down! The case we got for this job was the departments old game server, this had packed up with one core not working and since was xeons we couldn’t afford to replace this so upgrading a server case from a full size server motherboard with old harddrive connections with only molex power to a new quad core AMD machine with sata was a challenge. Getting it out was the first challenge with no decent screwdriver (till we aquired one from Adam (thanks)). There was so many screws holding the thing down but we striped it right back to bare metal eventually allowing the motherboard mounts to move to more suited locations. With no back plate for the harddrives we had to wire them in manually in the hot swap bays as a new back plate would cost about £60 which we couldn’t justify with still wanting a 24 port gigabyte switch (managed if possible) anyone got one send it my way! But anyhow most things went without a hitch still got more fans to wire since out of the 7 case fans only one works from lack of fan ports on the motherboard but hopefully a molex adapter will sort this as we had to do with the sata power also. We had some rewiring to do also as the old board was 2 physical cpus so had a 8 pin power to the CPU so we hacked one off another CPU and joined a nice 4 pin onto it, rather a good job but Ash said he will solider it just to make sure on Monday. So that’s another server nearly done. Now just need another 3/4 cases to do the rest!

Busy Busy Busy….
Life has become very hectic and busy recently why not been blogging but if you still been following me on Twitter/ Facebook or even Picasa for that matter I’m still out there taking lots of pictures out and about!
At moment I’m on Easter break and haven’t stopped since I came “on holiday” but I will follow this post up with a few posts so be aware! Also check out some of the new links I’ve added to personal friends blogs
Phone Case
With my old phone case getting old and flaky (was only a cheap one for like £5 from a random market stall). I went to the internet in search for a new phone case and found a nice one on offer which was a Hard Case which was better in my mind than a flexible one like the old one. So now got it and seems alot better as I can charge my phone without removing the case! So I took a few pictures, only downfall I see is that when using Vaseline for lips the back gets oil collection on it which kinda bad but still seems ok.
Added a few of the notice I received with it (Hong Kong customs notice) Looked interesting to me

When all things….
Fail
Well after today things like to go wrong at times but are always rectified with random events happening! We had a fun challenge to work out what a machine even did in Freeside today… still no clue it had crazy amount of ports we ain’t used for a very long time the only ones we recognized was a nice serial input and a Ethernet cable input! But was a very interesting machine with even a AA battery powering inside it with a watch battery aswell!
O and onto the fail part of my day travelling back on my bike as I do most days we come to the round about before the crossing and there’s traffic all the way up the road up to the level crossing… suspecting just high traffic since barriers are down we continue at side of the road, get there to wait for nearly half an hour! 3 trains gone by and still won’t lift up very fail at this point we get advised by a passer by that there is a footbridge so me, Joe and a girl who was waiting with us went up to have a adventure to find this level crossing so all that time wasted for a 5 minute detour around some streets!……. Grr trains are annoying sometimes when level crossings are involved!
